Memories of the Walled City - Legacy of memory
Although Kowloon Walled City has always been a notorious crime zone, the residents continue their daily lives here. So, what is their real life like? Before the demolition, all squatter houses were illegally built by homeless people and refugees from World War II to the Chinese Civil War. They were used as their temporary residences. Due to the poor living conditions of the people and the lack of public security management, it has gradually become a gathering point for the underworld. With the growth of the population, the densely packed buildings filled the land of the Walled City, and people could only shuttle through the dark, narrow streets and were kept in a labyrinthine city of sin.
On the other hand, it is precisely because of the alternative and gloomy nature of the Kowloon Walled City that it triggers our imaginations about the world in the Walled City. Many classic Chinese and foreign film and television works are based on the Walled City, such as "Kung Fu Hustle", "Blade Runner" and "Ghost in the Shell", etc., all of which have been infused with elements of the Walled City as the theme or scene which are impressive.
