Chapter 2 -The darknest week in my life

October 12, 1956
Three days of fierce battle have left us frightened, we are often awakened by the sound of tear gas at around 3 to 4 a.m. It is impossible for us to know anything about the chaos outside, except for news reports on the radio. I heard that the disturbance was caused by a group of thugs from Li Cheng Uk Village a few days ago...how would it flow over us?

October 13, 1956
Our rice urn is almost empty. Dad decided to take the risk of heading out this morning to borrow some food, but he has not returned... "He will be back soon!" I can only pacify my mom and little brother who were choking with tears.

The "National Flag" incident: The final straw that triggered the riot

In 1956, the prohibition of not posting flags or any decoration on the wall by the Committee of Resettlement Affairs was announced a week before the celebration. In response, on 10 October 1956, a staff member ripped down the Nationalist flags that were posted on Block G of Li Cheng UK public housing. Due to political sensitivity, the protest spread rapidly to Sham Shui Po.

The Double Tenth Riots

10-12 October
A bloody riot ripped through the overcrowded resettlement areas as a result of extreme disorder, rioters torched leftist schools and shops throughout the night. According to the Report on the Riots in Kowloon and Tsuen Wan, although the riots began because of the "National Flag incident", the riots were led by the triad societies "14 K" and "Wo On Lok". The situation spread and intensified two days after the disturbance. A curfew was ordered throughout Kowloon, and the military was called into action to suppress the riots.

13-14 October
The Emergency (Detention Orders) Regulations entered into force on 13 November. The newly enacted regulation permitted the indefinite detention of any arrestee against whom the governor in council found it impracticable to enforce a deportation order. More than 1,200 people (who were suspected of engaging in the riots) were arrested by the legal measure of detention without trial.

15-16 October
Gradually, the disturbance was controlled and life in the resettlement areas returned to normal.
