With the demolition of Kai Tak Airport and the Tuen Ma Line subway network coverage, Kowloon City has been experiencing the changes of the times. To Kwa Wan has its own characteristics in different periods. Some landmark buildings can still stand in the district, and some have disappeared under the baptism of time. The story of the community can only be continued by word of mouth. This guided tour hopes to introduce To Kwa Wan to everyone through storytelling. There are countless intriguing stories in To Kwa Wan. In the face of irresistible changes, what we can do is record the remaining ones, pay more attention to this community, and let everyone know that there is a place called To Kwa Wan in Kowloon City, which is full of history. The stories and regional culture are worthy of everyone's stop and take a closer look.

Vision and Mission

The two main phrases in the name of our cultural trip are "cherishing" and "exploring," which are directly connected to the overall activity's fundamental ideas. In To Kwa Wan, they have been experiencing transitions from the old to the new. At this time, we want to remember To Kwa Wan. Cherishing what is still here and the stories concealed within each tangible asset. Additionally, "cherishing" can be indicated as "knowledge" and "understanding" in Chinese. Let everyone "know" the fun of traveling in To Kwa Wan, and we will expose everyone to the area's historical and cultural "knowledge" during the trip.

This tour aims to direct, explain, and share various information as the participants "explore" To Kwa Wan's well-known and less commonly recognized sites together. In cultural travel, the term "tour" also refers to enjoyment. We will give everyone supplementary tourism information about To Kwa Wan in the tour guide included in the schedule. We encourage everyone to go travelling and get to know To Kwa Wan. The title of the guided trip was thus inspired.

About To Kwa Wan

Behind the name

There are two different versions towards the name "To Kwa Wan". The first one is about the bay "Hoi Sum Island" in the past To Kwa Wan because of its shape resembling a "To Gua" in Cantonese (English: sweet potato). The second version is that in 1860, the map of the Sino-British Treaty of Beijing named this place Tujiawan in Putonghua.

Historical background

To Kwa Wan was developed into a light industrial area in the past. There are a lot of cotton mills, chemical plants, hardware factories, etc. The ancient urban planning of the traditional tenement buildings was planned with shops in the front and residences in the back. Old To Kwa Wan’s living area was a combination of both industrial, commercial and residential use.
Until 1969, To Kwa Wan’s land use was being revised in the zoning development plan. The original residential and industrial land was converted into residential property only by the government. It marked a watershed in the urban planning strategy of Hong Kong. Regarding the current land use zoning method, the government has strictly separated the land use of residential, commercial, and industrial. We can see, Kowloon City District is facing an important moment of transition from the old to the new.

We will then move to the gasholder of the Hong Kong and China Gas Limited Company. The remaining big gasholder is a collective memory of To Kwa Wan citizens. Lastly, we will go to the Kowloon City Ferry Pier, where we can see the old Kai Tak Airport as our dismissal point.

Tour Spots

1. ~Old Hong Kong Ice Room
Wing Heung Café

The Wing Heung Café still retains the style of a traditional ice room, such as old window grilles, cardboard stone floors, wooden booth seats, three-leaf ceiling fans, light green tile walls, and red signboards. Menu also includes special food such as French toast, poached egg in hot water, and Iced Grass Jelly. The sight and taste are full of the style of old Hong Kong. Besides, it was the filming location of classic dramas and movies.

The old To Kwa Wan was a factory area. At noon every day, there are many customers in Wing Heung Café, and the business is excellent. However, when Hong Kong's industry began to decline and factories moved north, the number of diners coming to the restaurant gradually decreased, business thus also dropped, and employees left one by one. Currently, only mother and son are left to run the café.

Pau Chung Street

In the 1920s, the "Kwong Man Loong Firecracker Factory", owned by the "King of Firecrackers" Chen Lanfang, was moved to the Pak Tai Temple area in To Kwa Wan from Mong Kok. The road that was completed later was named Pau Chung Street. When the Firecracker Factory was at its peak, it was one of the largest factories in Hong Kong. During the coronation ceremony of the Queen Elizabeth II, she even specially asked the “Kowng Man Loong Firecracker Factory” to set off fireworks in London. The merchants in Pau Chung Street not only produced firecrackers, but also produced cosmetics. The cosmetic powder made by "Sanfeng Fenzhuang" can be used for threading. Some people still use cosmetic powder to clean goldware. However, the Pacific War dealt a significant blow to the production chain of firecracker factories, which gradually shrank and were eliminated after the war.

3. ~Old Times Kai Tak
Tenement Building Cluster on 13 Streets

As early as the 1920s, many villages in To Kwa Wan were demolished, new land was auctioned by the government, and large-scale development of factories began in To Kwa Wan. In the visible area of the 13 Streets, the first rope factory appeared in 1924, and after World War II, it was converted into Nanyang Yarn Factory. At the end of the 1950s, when the population was increasing rapidly and the demand for housing was increasing, the landlords transferred the land to build tenement buildings, and the 13 Streets became a collection of the tenement building cluster.  The streets were named after the auspicious animals. In the past, it was close to Kai Tak Airport. Considering flight safety, the height of the building was especially restricted. The height  was only five to seven floors. The ground floor of the tenement complex is for shops, and the upper floors are for commercial and residential purposes. Since the 13 Streets was originally a private street, there is no government supervision for parking on the street, so a large number of garages are attracted to settle in. Now, after the renovation of the 13 Streets’ exterior wall, it is painted in bright colors and has become a famous landmark in To Kwa Wan.

4. ~Centennial Historic Monuments
Cattle Depot Artist Village

The Animal Quarantine Station and Slaughterhouse were constructed in 1908 and are now known as the Cattle Depot Artist Village. Since To Kwa Wan was situated on the city's edge in the early days, and Ma Tau Kok was closed to the waterfront for the benefit of shipping, various industrial activities also took place in this region. Consequently, To Kwa Wan's neighbours started residing in cowsheds, and the living environment was harsh. In 1969, a new slaughterhouse was completed in Cheung Sha Wan, and the entire cattle shed was converted into a quarantine station and trading centre. It was not until 1999 when the central slaughterhouse in Sheung Shui opened that the cattle shed in Ma Tau Kok was officially closed. At that time, the way livestock were transported to the cowshed was also interesting. Some imported from the mainland will be transported to Hung Hom by car, and then transported to the cowshed by container truck; others will take a boat to Hong Kong from other places, and after disembarking at the Kowloon City Car Ferry Pier, they will walk along Ma Tau Kok Road. Generally, they are driven into the cowshed by the workers, and the livestock leave dung on ground all the way. In addition, it was relisted as a Grade II historical building in Hong Kong in December 2009, and later developed into the Cattle Depot Art Village, which provides a space for artists to perform. It will hold art exhibitions and other activities from time to time, and also rent exhibition venues to different groups.

5. ~Neighborhood Collective Memories
The gasholder of the Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited

There is a huge gas facility when passing To Kwa Wan Road near San Shan Road. The magnificent gas drum is the main landmark of To Kwa Wan. The existing large gasholder on Ma Tau Kok Road was completed in 1956. It is a collective memory of the old neighbourhood in To Kwa Wan, and it witnessed the area's industrial development. With the completion of the Tai Po Industrial Estate Gas Plant in 1986, the To Kwa Wan Gas Plant became a backup. In 2015, one of the original two gas drums was dismantled, leaving only this large and round "climbing frame" that remains.

6. ~Coastal Scenery
Kowloon City Ferry Terminal

The Kowloon City Ferry Pier, also known as the Kowloon City Vehicular Ferry Pier, was built in 1965 to operate the route from Kowloon City to North Point. The pier looking towards the Kai Tak runway development area, was the first permanent ferry pier built in Hong Kong after the war, replacing the old one that was destroyed by the airport expansion works 13 years ago during the Japanese occupation.

Since there was no cross-harbor tunnel or bridge at that time, cars had to rely on the vehicular ferry to cross the harbour, which is a common memory of many Hong Kong drivers. In 1998, the Kowloon City Vehicular Ferry Pier was officially discontinued, and vehicular ferries gradually declined, witnessing Hong Kong transportation's and East Kowloon's development in the latter half of the 20th century. The Kowloon City Vehicular Ferry Pier was listed as a Grade II historic building in 2014.
