Background  背景

Reasons why the Fujianese gather in North Point

In the first half of the 20th century, there were already some Fujianese businessmen from Southeast Asia making investments and setting up businesses in North Point, for example, Koeh Chhun-iong. Shanghainese were still the largest Chinese immigrant group in North Point at that time.  Meanwhile, many Fujianese worked in Southeast Asia and united with their families in Hong Kong with the assistance of the Fukien Chamber of Commerce. Thus, many Fujianese children came to Hong Kong with their mothers. There were also Fujianese people who came to Hong Kong to engage in overseas remittances and export trade between Hong Kong and Southeast Asia because there was a pier to and from Southeast Asia including Indonesia in North Point. Furthermore, North Point has attracted many Fujianese people because of the high-quality and cheap housing like the New Metropolis Building, as well as the convenient transportation to the Central Business District, Kowloon and Hung Hom. Also, as the Fujianese were unfamiliar with Cantonese, they eventually chose to live in North Point to take care of one another.

Fujianese becoming the largest immigrant group in North Point

In the 1970s, the Fujianese people gradually became the largest immigrant community in North Point when the Shanghainese moved to other districts. Moreover, these Fujianese immigrants usually come from Zhangzhou, Quanzhou and Jinjiang in China.
